It is with great regret that we announce the passing of our Club President Dr Hywel Francis. Hywel a former player wrote the history book, “The Magnificent Seven” to mark our centenary year and later became our President which was we know was a great sense of pride for him. Our sincere condolences go to Mair & the family during this sad time. Below is a picture of Hywel with is Son Dafydd & former Seven Sisters RFC, Osprey & Wales player Paul James.
In memory of a good friend and a true socialist.
I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of my friend and former colleague, Hywel Francis.
Hywel served as our MP for 14 years and always fought for the communities who elected him to represent them. He was a strong advocate for the values he stood for and fully represented them both in Westminster and beyond. I benefited from that commitment and the support he always offered during my first years in office after being elected in 2011.
Hywel was a passionate individual who championed the fight against social injustices and particularly against apartheid and fascism. He always strove to ensure a fairer society, one in which communities were not left behind and people were given every opportunity to improve their lives.
His wisdom and knowledge will be hugely missed by all.
My condolences go to Mair and family at this sad and difficult time.
It is with great sadness that we hear of the passing of Prof. Hywel Francis, a former chairman of our group. Hywel was Professor of Continuing Education prior to his first election in 2001 as a Member of Parliament for Aberavon.
After standing down from Parliament, Hywel was a strategic adviser for Swansea University on Archives, Regional Policy and Widening Access. Whilst at the University he was the founder of the South Wales Miners’ Library, the prime-mover in establishing the Coalfield and Richard Burton Archives and the creator of a part-time degree scheme which grew into the Community University of the Valleys.
He was a great supporter of the Friends of Neath Abbey Iron Company and of industrial heritage. He will be sorely missed.
