It is with deep sadness that we share with you the sad news that our friend and WWII veteran Henry Poisson passed away. 🥀

▪️Henry was born in Turner, ME on July 25, 1923, and grew up with 2 brothers. His father was a hard woodworker and Henry sometimes helped him in the forest or at the farm. In early 1943, Henry and most of his friends that he used to work with in the forest decided to join the United States Army. Henry entered the service in March 1943 and started his basic training in Fort Davis, Texas. He was later assigned to C Company, 150th Combat Engineer Battalion and then completed more training with the men of his new outfit.

▫️The 150th Engineer Combat Battalion landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy in June 1944. They suffered their first casualties when a vehicle hit a mine.

▪️Building bridges for the infantry, trucks and tanks, the 150th was an essential unit to defeat the axis in Europe. The Engineers built bridges, repaired highways and kept them open, blew out enemy pillboxes, removed mines and booby traps, set up depots and workshops and other jobs necessary for road building.

▫️The 150th Engineer Combat Battalion also took part in many rivers crossing including the Moselle River in Dornot, France in September 1944. Sergeant Poisson was in charge of the first boat to reach the enemy shore successfully. Due to the casualties suffered by other infantry troops, further crossings were imperative. Henry made four trips carrying supplies and evacuated twenty wounded infantrymen. On the fifth trip at 0230 hours in the morning, the enemy shot flares over the river, machine gunned the boat crew, and wounded two of them. After this action it was impossible to use a narrow strip of land to evacuate wounded and bring up supplies. A small lake behind this narrow island afforded some protection, though it was subjected to direct enemy machine gun and mortar fire. Henry stripped himself and, by swimming and pushing the boat, evacuated the wounded and administered first aid until medics arrived.

▪️Henry Poisson was the most decorated soldier in the 150th and was one of the few American Soldiers to be awarded the British Military Medal for his courage and devotion beyond the call of duty.🇫🇷🇺🇸

Goodbye Henry, you will be missed.
