Rest In Peace coach, you will always be in my “back mind”
I was saddened to learn today of the passing of Heiko Salzwedel
If you have worked with me as a coach then you have also benefited from the knowledge and influence of Heiko.
As an athlete, I struggled under Heiko, I was one of few who could handle the training loads, however I was rarely ready to compete, I was always intrigued in the physiology behind Heiko’s approach and I’ve followed the general principles that he taught me albeit with a very light version of the volumes we were subject to. As a coach I also learnt never to follow most of the mental performance and psychological methods that Heiko implemented in Aus.
One learns from both the good and not so good practices of those who we reference in life and I’m the coach I have been partly due to Heiko. His influence is obvious.
I always have given Heiko the benefit of the doubt, I exercised empathy and put myself in his shoes as a world leading coach arriving from What had been East Germany into Australia and not being as welcomed as he should have been, a young family in tow, a different culture, a group of young men forging our own pathways amd with our own complex issues. It must have been brutal. And then he was succssful, which only made life tougher, not easier for him. I questioned Heiko’s methods but I never doubted his intent.
Each time I ran in to Heiko around the world he was open and willing to discuss coaching, I believe he was proud of who we became as athletes but equally proud as who we became as men and I know he respected me for following in his footsteps as a coach.
Rest easy Heiko
