Today all of us in the South Sound mourn the passing of Harold Moss. He was was a friend and trusted mentor to many. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity I had to learn from him, laugh with him and be in his presence. Read my full statement below:

“Harold Moss is the reason that we can eat in any restaurant that we want to. The fact that we can walk into a bar. The fact that we can buy a house in any neighborhood. The fact that someone like me now can be the third African-American mayor of the city of Tacoma.”

I love my job, which lets me inside meaningful moments in other people’s lives. Today, I loved hearing the story of how Harold Moss, a local civil rights icon and Tacoma’s first Black mayor, touched the life of Victoria Woodards – who later became Tacoma’s third Black mayor.

The passing of Harold Moss is an enormous loss for the community. As the first Black city council member and mayor of Tacoma, he paved the way for the people of Tacoma to grow & thrive while helping the city overcome many obstacles. Sending my condolences to his family & friends

Now I was hoping I would hear this interview again today about Harold Moss’s first house in the 253 @knkxfm @allie_ferguson … RIP Harold Moss

Rest In Peace Mayor Harold Moss. A friend of my Dad’s from long ago at the Urban League, and someone he looked up to. Someone who fought hard for so many years to make Tacoma a better and fairer place. Tacoma’s First black City Councillor and Mayor. You will be missed.

So saddened to hear about the passing of Tacoma barrier-breaker Harold Moss. A local civil rights icon, Pierce County and Washington state are better for his life in public service and bold, tireless pursuit of equality. Rest well, Mayor.

Harold Moss, the first African American mayor of Tacoma, has died. “Our community is stronger today because of Harold and his defense of civil rights, his devotion to civil service and his selflessness.” @PierceCoCouncil
