Sad news just now about Harold Janeway’s passing. He was a wise and wonderful friend, supporter and mentor to me. He and Betsy have been one of the constants of our lives and his passing leaves a big hole in my heart and in the fabric of our community.
We are mourning the recent passing of our longtime friend, Harold Janeway. A former state senator who dedicated himself to conservation and nonprofit leadership, Harold was a fervent civil rights supporter. His kindness, compassion and generosity has made a lasting impact on New Hampshire. Our deepest condolences to his wife Betsy, his children, and grandchildren.
Today, Senate President Donna Soucy released the following statement in remembrance of her former colleague, Senator Harold Janeway:
“Senator Janeway was a soft-spoken, gentle, and generous man who will be greatly missed by all of us in the Senate – and indeed by all of New Hampshire.
Harold was also a man who treasured the good things in life – swimming in his pond, sleeping on the porch, and a daily piece of pie with his lunch. Every day he came to the State House with his Wall Street Journal under his arm, covered in Post-its and handwritten notes in the margins. This thoughtful and careful deliberation of his work and of the issues was his hallmark as a legislator. When Harold rose to speak on the Senate floor, his colleagues truly listened because we all knew that he had carefully considered the issues.
Harold worked diligently on environment and conservation issues, led the fight for reproductive rights, and was a true ally and champion for the LGBTQ community. His work will have a lasting impact on the State House, generations of Granite Staters, and the very fabric of our state. May we will all honor his legacy with our action, advocacy, and attentiveness to others.”
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Harold Janeway, a beloved member of our Foundation community, champion of conserving NH’s natural resources, protecting LGBTQ rights. Our deepest condolences to Harold’s family & friends. We will miss him very much.
