Gustavo Angel Esparza shot and killed in Las Cruces police shootout identified

Gustavo Angel Esparza Death – Cause Of Death: 35-year-old Gustavo Angel Esparza has been named by the Las Cruces police as the man that was shot and killed by police in a shootout that occurred in the middle of a residential neighborhood on Saturday 9th October  2021 after he shot and killed a police officer that conducting a traffic stop.

Police said Esparza was wanted initially on a federal warrant for a probation violation of weapon ownership in California. He had numerous criminal records which include arresting him in 2014 and remaining on parole for attempted rape in California, multiple drug violations and burglary, and vehicle theft.

According to Las Cruces police, the shooting occurred near the intersection of 5th Street and Wilson Avenue at about 8 p.m. Police said he shot two police offices before he began to run, the police pursued him to the intersection of 4th Street and Davis Avenue, Esparzarefuse to get out of the vehicle. Police improvised another means to make him come out by using a chemical agent. Esparza got out and went back inside to pick his gun before the police shot and killed him.

A bystander was shot during the shooting, the bystander was transported to El Paso where he remains in steady condition. The shooting investigation is underway.
