Just learned my boss EP on the Seven network’s real life, Gerald Stone, has passed away at the age of 87. Gerald always knew what a story was and more importantly knew it’s promo line. He was tough but fair, hard to rile, but when you did, it was a force

Respected journalist and producer Gerald Stone has died age 87.

We look back at this #AustralianStory moment from 2014, where Gerald reflects on the time in 1975 that his boss, Kerry Packer, allowed him to cover fighting in East Timor … on the condition he took Kerry with him.

Former 60 minutes journalist Ian Leslie paid tribute to the first executive producer of 60 minutes, Gerald Stone, honouring him as “a giant” in the Australian broadcasting industry whose legacy continued over several generations

Gerald Stone loved a great story but he loved people even more.
He had a clear-eyed view of the world with all its epic tragedy but he reminded everyone around him of how to find the best in other human beings. In the decade I worked closely with Gerald I witnessed his morality, his sense of fairness and a heart felt concern for how we treated people.
The spirit he inspired was his lasting legacy. His soul mate, Irene and his children and grandchildren should know that so many of us will always remember him at his best and brightest.

Sad to hear about the death of Gerald Stone. Part of television history. I was with Nine when 60 Minutes started. It was a great time to be in the industry.

A great loss. Gerald Stone brought 60 Minutes to Australia and presided over it during its halcyon days.

It’s a shame his legacy has been eroded in the past ten years, as it’s now a tabloid shadow of its former past.

Vale Gerald Stone.

RIP Gerald Stone. Thank you for your amazing contribution to Australia’s way of life. From a very young age, 60 minutes was a big influence. It opened my eyes to the world outside my door, &, for that, I’ll remain forever grateful. Condolences to Gerald’s family, & friends.
