Today we are saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Garland Pinholster. Garland moved to Ball Ground thirty plus years ago and immediately became a part of the community. He served from 1990 until 2002 as a State Representative representing Cherokee and Pickens counties. During and after his time serving as our representative he always put Ball Ground first. While serving as a member of the State Board of Transportation Garland procured funding of nine hundred and twenty thousand dollars of federal grant dollars to beautify our downtown. The downtown plaza was dedicated in honor of Garland on September 24, 2011. Garland definitely left a mark on Ball Ground.

Mayor Roberts, City Council and Staff extends our deepest sympathy to his wife Darsa Pinholster, his children and many friends.

We lost an Oglethorpe legend in the passing of former coach, Garland Pinholster. He was not just a great basketball coach. He was also a great mentor, friend, and man, and he loved Oglethorpe dearly. The court we play on today is named after him. His random, out of the blue phone calls every year were always appreciated. He will be greatly missed.

Petrels- I am so sorry to share that legendary OU basketball coach, honorary degree holder, former Trustee and one of our Stormiest Petrels, Dr. Garland Pinholster has passed away after a brief illness. He was one of the best extemporaneous
speakers I have ever met. He wrote many special motivational letters and never failed to thank people for the work they did. He loved Oglethorpe University and cherished the many friendships he made during his 62 year connection with us. I will miss him terribly, but look forward to gathering to celebrate his amazing life. My deepest condolences to his wife Darsa, two daughters and “his boys” who he treated as family.

The world of basketball lost a giant with the passing of Garland Pinholster. His warm heart and love of @OglethorpeUniv was felt by so many in our community. We will continue to honor coach for years to come with our play on our home court that bears his name! #PetrelsForever
