Retired State Representative Floyd Breeland passed away this morning.
Many of us have known the Breeland’s all our lives. In 2019, I was honored to listen to the Floyd and Felicia Breeland tell their story in one of their favorite places, Emanuel AME.
Former State Representative Floyd Breeland died this morning. We learned of his passing from the man who replaced him in the District 111 seat in the Statehouse. Wendell Gilliard says Breeland was a political icon, confidant, and trusted advisor. Breeland served in the House from 1992 to 2008. May he Rest In Peace.
Rest in God’s peace Representative Floyd Breeland. I was honored to have the chance to hold powerful conversations with you while I was a student at the College of Charleston. Your impact on our state and on our teaching profession in SC will be long felt. We are better because of you.
Rest In Peace The Honorable Representative Floyd Breeland. He was a gentle giant whom I highly respected. His wife was my elementary school music teacher, and he mentored me when I served on the faculty at the College of Charleston. Representative Breeland is a South Carolina treasure. Certainly a mighty oak has fallen and a library has burned. My thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Breeland
This is a difficult tribute to post. Today I learned that former S.C. Representative Floyd Breeland earned his Heavenly Wings. Uncle Floyd was one of the Men in my Father’s longtime circle of friends that I gravitated to at a young age.
He was a Mentor, a Counselor and just a good friend to me! I could talk to him about things that sometimes I couldn’t talk to my Dad about.
He was born to be a leader. He guided so many young folks throughout his career as an Educator and Administrator in the school system. After retiring from the School system he was just getting started. I had the pleasure of being able to personally witness his outstanding career as a state legislator from the time he came into the General Assembly until the time he retired. Representative Breeland was an outstanding legislator always working for his constituents.
Well, for Floyd Breeland that retirement was just the launching pad to another career! He went to the College of Charleston to direct the Call me Mister program. As Director of this program he was instrumental in guiding dozens of African American Males into the teaching profession until he retired again a couple of ago!
He was an awesome singer and had a big booming voice that earned him the name big Thunder! To know him was to love him.
I Thank Mrs Breeland and LaVanza for sharing him with all of us for so many years! I hope and pray that you will find some comfort in the many wonderful memories that you created through the years.
I am going to miss him more than I can articulate! Rest in Heavenly peace my Friend!
