” The Highway Patrol is investigating after a pickup driver fatally struck a wrecker driver and the driver of a disabled car on the right shoulder of the Ohio Turnpike on Thursday night.
According to Lt. Richard Reed, the crash happened near milepost 132 eastbound in Henrietta Township in Lorain County at approximately 11:23 p.m.
Responding troopers learned 42-year-old Eric Ackerman of Sandusky was operating an Interstate Towing of Norwalk wrecker to help a driver load two Sea-Doo jet ski’s from his trailer onto the wrecker on the right shoulder, Lt. Reed said.
Both of the drivers were outside when a pickup truck heading eastbound went off the road and hit them, according to Lt. Reed.
On July 21, 2020 at approximately 11:23 pm., troopers from the Milan Post responded to a multiple vehicle fatality crash that occurred on the Ohio Turnpike near the 132 milepost eastbound in Henrietta Township.
Once on scene, troopers determined that a wrecker from Interstate Towing of Norwalk was assisting a disabled vehicle on the right shoulder when it was struck by an eastbound pick-up truck. The wrecker driver and the driver of the disabled vehicle were outside of their vehicles loading two Sea-Doo jet ski’s from the trailer of the disabled vehicle onto the wrecker when they were struck by a pick-up truck that ran off the road.
Upon striking the 2018 International wrecker and the trailer of the disabled vehicle, the 2009 Chevrolet 2500 pick-up truck became airborne and landed on its top in the right lane.
The wrecker driver was wearing a reflective vest at the time of the crash and the wrecker had its overhead emergency lights activated. The wrecker driver, identified as Eric Ackerman, age 42 of Sandusky and the driver of the disabled vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity of the driver of the disabled vehicle will be released once next of kin notification has been made.
The driver of the 2009 Chevrolet 2500 pick-up truck, identified as Zachary Santoro, age 30 of Bellevue suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mercy Health – Lorain Hospital by ground ambulance. Impairment and seatbelt usage are unknown at this time.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is being assisted at the scene by Life Care Ambulance, Florence Township EMS, Interstate Towing, the Lorain County Coroner’s Office, and the Ohio Turnpike Commission.
The crash scene remains active at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Traffic is currently being restricted to pass on the left shoulder and the roadway is expected to fully reopen without restriction at approximately 4:30 a.m.
