Really saddened to hear that the wonderful Eddie Winship has passed away. We had so many wonderful times talking about Reading and how fantastic its cultural scene is. He did a great deal to support our community and will be greatly missed by many. I know I’ll miss him deeply

Innaa lillaahi wa innaa ilayhee raaji’oon. Verily we belong to Allah, and verily to Him do we return.

It is with great sadness that we receive the news of the passing of the “Big Heart Man”. That is how I liked to think of my friend Eddie Winship. Physically tall in stature, his presence in a gathering was unmissable, especially with his signature stetson. But it was his big, kind heart that shone through. Eddie gave voice to the voiceless. He would seek out those at the margins, give air to their cause and sufferings. Eddie was a man of principle. Strong man Eddie, in the true sense. He was not afraid to engage on hot topics. I remember the times (and they are still with us) when people see me coming and their words and actions are all about trying to gauge: are you a “good Muslim” or a “bad Muslim”. Not Eddie. Fair man Eddie, in the true sense. Whereas many have been swept up (often unwittingly) by the wave of Islamophobia, Eddie stands tall, the wave crashes and smashes up against him; rock solid is our Eddie. On the contrary, he challenges the hate head on, be it clumsy bigotry or policy sophistry. Eddie gave shelter to our Muslim Communities as they weather the storm. Who will fill the big boots now of The Big Heart Man? Our deepest condolences to all of Eddie Winship’s family and loved ones.

We were extremely sad to hear of the death of Eddie Winship. He was an incredibly kind and generous supporter of the Düsseldorf artists every year at the Reading Fringe Festival. And more importantly he was a lovely, authentic and thoroughly entertaining soul.

We send our love and condolences to his family and his broader Reading family. He will be greatly missed.

God bless you Eddie Winship a lovely man who we always loved chatting to on air & at the local events you so passionately attended. We are sure you’re having a blast up there and long may your community spirit & love of the arts live on dear man.

Eddie Winship You were a gift to our community. I will always remember you as a warrior who fought to the very last. I will not forget you. RIP my friend
