I am so very saddened to learn of the passing this morning of a good friend of mine. Don Persson was a giant of a man and a great leader of Renton. He was one of my very first supporters when I first considered seeking office at the King County Council.
Today I’m heartbroken along with many others in our city over the passing of my dear friend and 20-year City Council Colleague Don Persson. Don was a warm-hearted, exceptional public servant who worked tirelessly for our city over 50 years, first in our Police Department where he retired as Deputy Chief, and then on Council for five terms. He was legendary in these roles, and left both the police and city council wishing for more years with him. During all these 50 years he also tirelessly volunteered in our greater community, helping seniors, youth, park patrons, neighborhoods, businesses, and anyone and everyone who needed help. He was also an amazing master chef and oversaw food preparation for countless community events, often waking up early in the morning to lead a crew in preparing food for hundreds, including Thanksgiving Dinners for Seniors, Volunteer Recognition Dinners, Renton River Days events, Neighborhood Picnics, and so many others. If you’ve attended a community picnic, chances are high that you enjoyed some of Don’s cooking. He had a sparkling sense of humor and he loved everyone in our community. I’ll dearly miss you Don. Thanks for 35 years of incredible friendship and 20 years as an oustanding colleague.
