A TRIBUTE FROM BAWA’S FOUNDER TO A DEAR FRIEND, COLLEAGUE, AND HERO – PROF. DR. DN WIRAWAN, MPH

It is with deeply saddened hearts that we share news of the passing of Professor Dewa Nyoman Wirawan, who was not only our great mentor, guru, advisor, colleague, and friend but one of the kindest and most brilliant people that we have had the good karma and good fortune to know in this lifetime.

Prof. Wirawan was a great and celebrated doctor, whom many, if not most, doctors in Bali knew and studied under as the Head of Department of the Public Health Master’s Program at Udayana University. He was dedicated to fighting for public and community health and set up Yayasan Kerti Praja, a foundation providing free treatment for HIV patients. Prof. Wirawan always went to great lengths to help disadvantaged and at-risk members of the community, and also extended this care and dedication towards animals.

Prof Wirawan was a very busy man, and when BAWA first met with him, we were told we had ten minutes. This meeting went on to last hours, sharing stories about his childhood and his love for animals, especially Bali Dogs – ‘anjing kampung’. He was one of the greatest proponents for animal welfare and told us that when he was young, his grandmother would not allow him to so much as kill an ant. He grew up with this philosophy of ‘do no harm’ and passed it on to his own family and all that he met.

The outcome of that meeting led to the formation of Prof. Wirawan’s amazing idea to start Program Dharma – a rabies control program based on the one health approach, which unites the three main sectors of human, animal, and environmental health. He became our partner and the leader of Program Dharma, which has reached and maintained rabies-free status in four villages of the Sanur area and successfully passed village regulations in two villages against the dog meat trade.

I will miss the late-night dinners, the laughter, and the absolute gift of being able to talk to somebody so brilliant and so kind in regards to so many different issues – human health and welfare, animal welfare, world politics, and any and all other global issues.

For those who have met Prof Wirawan, you will understand his fierceness, but this fierceness was fuelled with a fire for the truth. We hope that that truth for what is right and good in humankind, in animal welfare, in politics, will live on to be his legacy.

There is no holding back with Prof. Wirawan – the true freedom of speech, freedom of mind to think for oneself and to always try to find a way to do the right thing. He certainly made the world a better place.

I speak on behalf of all of us at Bali Animal Welfare Association who are thankful for the privilege and pleasure of knowing and working with this incredible man. The BAWA and Program Dharma teams send our deepest condolences to Prof. Wirawan’s beautiful family and all those he held dear.

Our dear mentor, friend, colleague, and hero, Prof. Wirawan, we will miss you. May you rest in the peace you so richly deserve.

Janice Girardi and the BAWA team.
