Death: Former Lake County Sheriff Gary Borders dies after a battle with cancer

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. —  Gary Borders, a former and longtime Lake County Sheriff who lived in Howey-in-the-Hills passed away following a battle with cancer, on Tuesday morning, November 16, 2021. Borders headed the sheriff’s office from 2006 until he retired in 2017. Gary served his country and the people until his retirement, he was known to be a good and hard-working sheriff who contributed a lot to the people and the society at large. He will be remembered forever and his legacy will live on.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced the passing of Gary Border on their Facebook official page. The announcement read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Retired Sheriff Gary S. Borders. Sheriff Borders began his law enforcement career in 1980 with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office and came to Lake County in 1991. Sheriff Borders served as the Lake County Jail Administrator from 1989 until his appointment to Sheriff of Lake County in 2006. In 2008, Sheriff Borders was elected as Sheriff by the people of Lake County and served two more terms before his retirement in 2017. Sheriff Borders lived out his retirement in Howey-In-The-Hills before losing his battle with cancer. Sheriff Borders was loved and adored by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office as well as the citizens of Lake County. Ceremonial arrangements are forthcoming and will be properly announced once they are solidified.”

Leesburg Police Department in a post on Facebook expresses their deepest condolences to the men and women of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and to the family and friends of Sheriff Gary Borders (retired). They also added that his dedicated service to the citizens of Leesburg, and to all of Lake County, will never be forgotten…Godspeed, Sheriff Borders! Seminole County Sheriff’s Office also extends their heartfelt sympathy on Facebook which says “Sheriff Dennis Lemma and the members of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office extend our heartfelt condolences to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on the loss of Retired Sheriff Gary S. Borders. Sheriff Borders’ family, friends, and the entire Lake County Sheriff’s Office will remain in our thoughts and prayers.”
