Tributes To David Walker

Heartbroken by this news – have been at a loss for words all day. David Walker was my first manager & mentor when I started in news in Coos Bay, OR & later in Eugene. He remained a friend & mentor even after I left. He was a local celeb & yet he was the most humble guy in the room. His voice was iconic, his heart & his whit too. I’ll never forget calling him after my first month on the job freaking out about something & he said “Angelica, it’s okay, it’s only TV News.” Those words have echoed in my head for the past 8 years on some of the toughest days. He treated everyone like an old friend & most were. I hope he gets to play endless golf on the other side. Rest easy Mr. Dave
My heart has been heavy and my eyes full of tears since getting the call this morning. I literally almost called him saying, “this has to be fake news!!!!” My dear friend, David Walker passed away this morning. A true legend! A classic voice! A heart of gold and full of love! Seriously, the most positive person I know! I am truly honored to have known him and golfed with him. He was a great mentor, friend, and broadcaster! The last time I saw David, he took me to lunch before I moved to Tucson, gave me the biggest hug, and said, “oooook I’ll see you later!”We were planning on playing golf here in Arizona but looks like we will be teeing off in heaven. Thoughts and Prayers to his children, Cameron and Carly. AND to the viewers in Western Oregon! Still doesn’t feel real… RIP golfing buddy
Ty Steele News
It is with a heavy heart that I share this sad news. My friend, former colleague, and the first news anchor I looked up to, David Walker, has passed away after battling a long illness. David was often called the newsroom Dad and for good reason. He always took care of his teammates and spent hours mentoring young journalists like myself. David had the special gift of helping you be better at your craft while encouraging you at the same time. Even the silly stuff, like teaching a young guy how to put TV makeup on for the first time, was not beneath him. I remember him giving me pointers on my first day on air at KVAL News. He had this special way of showing you the ropes without making you feel like an idiot, even though he had been in the business for decades. Thank you for taking care of me when I was just a newbie. You always made me feel like I was talented and could really make it in this crazy business called TV news. I owe you a lot for believing in me when I knew nothing. You are missed by so many my friend. Rest in peace brother.
