David Summergrad Death – Dead | Obituary – Passed Away
David Summergrad Death – Dead: A great loss was made known to InsideEko. As friends and families of the deceased are mourning the passing of their loved and cherished David Summergrad.
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend and NDI president, David Summergrad.
David was a tireless advocate for equality, equity, love and kindness amongst all peoples. He casted a wide net with his heart and mind – inspiring, encouraging and educating in Needham and in multiple communities beyond. He will be missed by the Needham Diversity Initiative and all the other communities he contributed so much to.
In this week of turmoil, we pause for a moment to pay tribute to those that did so much before us. But to honor their memories, we cannot help but make this absolute pledge.
David Summergrad, today we mourn, but tomorrow we continue the fight. Rest in peace, dear brother.
It is with overwhelming sorrow and shock that we share that David Summergrad passed away suddenly yesterday.
We are reeling with the loss to our family, and simultaneously aware that he was a man important to many: a friend, a mentor, an educator, a colleague, a voice of wisdom. We called some people last night but the news seemed to spread so quickly, illuminating clearly what a rich network of people he had, many of whom he himself had connected.
That incredible network – Wayland, Brookline, Explo, Curry, Pembroke, his 4th grade class from Glen Cove that was still in touch – is one of the many legacies he leaves behind. It might be impossible to count how many students and teachers he inspired, how people whose work he impacted. It’s hard to quantify the extent of his energy, his passion, his integrity, and his love.
When we are able to catch our breath, we will plan some sort of memorial service and share the details for people who want to celebrate his life and memory. In the meantime, in lieu of flowers, consider contributing to the ACLU, Black Lives Matter, or another education or social justice organization of your choosing.
Sad to hear about the sudden death of David Summergrad. David’s father was married to my former mother in law.
He was a great teacher and a great guy. My condolences to his wife Mary Grace and daughters Lisa and Anna.
Rest In Peace David.
The loss of David Summergrad is unfathomable to me. He’s been an unparalleled mentor, a compassionate colleague, and an incredible friend. He’s also been a fervent partner in snacking, commiserating, and problem-solving. He knew when to make the perfect joke, when to lend a hand, and when to tell me work was over and I should go to the bar. His and Mary Grace’s front porch will always be my favorite place for margaritas.
David brought me to EXPLO and made sure I stuck around. He showed me what leadership can be and more importantly allowed me to grow in that leadership with him by my side. I learned from him and I leaned on him. His presence calmed me. His voice comforted me. His humility inspired me. (His to-do lists confused me.)
As I spent last night reading through our email exchanges I laughed at the mundane and cried at the meaningful. There are so many people David’s positive influence reached over time, and I’m grateful that I was lucky enough to have him in my life. He made me a better educator, collaborator, and human being. David taught me more lessons than I could ever count, so I decided that sharing this list he sent me in 2017 should just about cover it.
In honor of David Summergrad, a dear friend, foot soldier for diversity, peace and social justice, tireless educator, humanitarian, husband, father, selfless helper, community leader, mentor, and all-around phenomenal human being, I’m sharing one of his favorite songs (YouTube link below) that kept him inspired for decades. No matter how the world tries to divide us along lines of difference, he was my brother. We are all in this life together, people, and David knew that and lived it everyday. May you Rest In Peace and Power, my special friend. You’ve done it all, you can lay it down. We’ve got it from here, brother. With love, respect and in solidarity forever. Thank you for talking the talk and walking the walk. ✊🏾❤️ #WakeUpEverybody
