I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of a dear friend, S&S editor, David Gale. I’ve known David for 20 years and worked with him on all three of the WondLa books. He was brilliant, a bit eccentric and most kindhearted. Every call would conclude with a bit of industry gossip and me trying to make him laugh. I’ll miss the laughter of that remarkable man. Our industry has lost a great.

Very sad to hear of the passing of David Gale. Such a kind man with a kind smile, an invaluable figure to so many in the world of children’s publishing. A terrible loss for all of us who write and illustrate for kids. Safe journey, my friend.

Oh no, David Gale.

Every book conference, I would loiter around the S&S booth to get my ten minutes with him. He was always kind enough to talk to me. Always kind enough to welcome a nobody.

Rest easy, David. I’ll miss our talks.

I’m so sad to hear that we lost David Gale. David was my first boss, my mentor, and a brilliant editor and tireless champion of gorgeous and diverse books.

I learned how to be an editor from him. Publishing, and the world, is a sadder place without him in it.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of David Gale. David was the editor of 41 of my books–all my books with S&S–and he made each one of them immeasurably better. I cannot say enough about the influence he had, not just on my work, but on that of many, many others.

This is really sad. I’ve read and loved many books that David Gale edited and I’ve always heard super things about him. Sending much love to his family, friends, and authors. This is a huge loss.

Very sad to hear that David Gale has passed. He edited some amazing books and did a lot for the Lambda Awards and LGBT causes in publishing. He also didn’t like that I made origami flowers out of his books for @navahw‘s baby shower and I appreciate that level of love for books.

We lost a brilliant, kind editor, David Gale, who worked at @SimonKIDS and was my editor for Somebody Please Tell Me Who I Am. He was quiet, thoughtful, sharply observant, and slyly funny, with a great passion for emerging voices and LGBTQ literature. A real mensch, a big loss.

David Gale was a generous, talented man & a groundbreaking book editor at Simon & Schuster The work he helped bring into the world inspired–& saved–many a young life. The books he engendered will remain a constant in years to come. Always, he always showed up for us.#davidgale

So sad to hear this. I feel honored to have met David Gale briefly at a @SimonKIDS event in 2018. It’s a highlight of my career. He has been behind a lot of wonderful books. RIP

When I started working at Simon & Schuster, I was a 20-nothing nobody.

David Gale—who was DAVID GALE—talked to me like I was his equal. He made me feel like I belonged in children’s publishing.

Rest In Peace, David.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved colleague David Gale. His passion for children’s literature and inclusivity on the page helped foster a legacy of books that changed lives and will continue to do so with every new generation of readers.

So sorry and sad to hear this news. David Gale was talented, passionate and funny, and it was always a pleasure to work with him. RIP.

David Gale was my first editor, fierce, principled, not remotely phased by this guy transitioning, and he took great delight in sharing his knowledge and passions. It was an honour to work with him. Publishing has lost an excellent voice and ally, and I’m going to miss him

We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
