I met this great man of God, Pastor Clint Barnes, and his beautiful wife, Sis. Kelly, many years ago when I worked at Sam Ash Music, before I’d even moved to Ecuador. It wasn’t long until we became very dear friends. And after I came here and started the work, they talked about it for some time and finally decided to come and visit Ecuador. So, they made their first trip here about 6 years ago, and that was it! It then became a yearly thing; every June or July they were here for 2 weeks!! They love Ecuador and its people. And they made such an impression on them, such a great witness and example to everyone here. And those trips just made our friendship even stronger and closer, too. We truly became like family!
Oh, how they’d jump right in and get to ‘missionarying’, as Pastor B called it. They worked in the gardens, they cut grass with machetes, cut down trees, laid cement slabs, they cleaned out bats, they prayed with people, they cast out devils, they preached, they sang, they played instruments, took people home from church, played with children. You name it, they did it! Pastor B has preached our Puyo church anniversary service for the past 5 years! He’d preach in that thick southern accent, and then want me to translate his words from ‘southern’ to spanish! haha!! Oh, the fun times we have had!! Every time they’d leave Puyo to start the journey back to the U.S., we’d go with them to the bus station to see them off. As they’d board the bus, we’d stand there and watch it leave, waving ‘goodbye’ to them. I always tried to be strong, but the tears would just flow out onto my cheeks as the bus got further into the distance. Because my ‘family’ was leaving. And I knew I’d miss them very much until next year’s trip.
The pandemic came and there was no trip this year. Pastor B wrote to me and told me how disappointed he was and sad that they didn’t get to come in 2020. He always made sure to stay in touch and ask about everyone, and let me know he was praying for Ecuador daily. Oh, little did I know that there’d be no more trips to Ecuador for Pastor B. I didn’t know that last year would be the very last time I’d get to wave ‘goodbye’ to Pastor B. It’d be the last time I’d get the honor to stand side by side with him on the platform and translate his southern drawl. It’d be the last time I’d hear him call me his big sister. It’d be the last time I’d see him pray for someone in the altar here. It’d be the last time I’d hug his neck and tell him how much I loved them and appreciated them coming and being such a blessing to Ecuador. Because yesterday, Pastor B left this life and went home to be with Jesus.
I wasn’t ready, Pastor B, for that to be the last wave. I wasn’t ready for that to be the last trip, and the last time I’d see you. I wasn’t ready…..but God’s plans were different than mine. And as for God, His way is perfect. I will cry all my tears for you Pastor B, my dear friend, my brother, my mentor, a tremendous man of God. You left your mark on Ecuador. My heart hurts deeply but even moreso for my beautiful friend, Sis. Kelly, the loving wife he has left behind, and for his 4 precious daughters. Ecuador loves y’all and we are grieving with you, and praying for you. Pastor B will be forever loved and always remembered!!
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
