What brilliant clouds we saw tonight another river! They were similar to the thunderheads I remember seeing when I grew up in the Midwest–the kind of majestic clouds in which a child could imagine faces and a variety of objects.
I dedicate these photos to the memory of Charlotte Schreiber, who passed away today in Seattle at the age of 88. I met Charlotte and her husband Ed when I was 25. I had the good fortune of housesitting for them one summer in Piermont, NY, and we became fast friends. When my mother died two years later, Charlotte took me under her wing and became my second mother. I don’t know what I would have done without her love and support for the past 40 years. Thank you, dear Charlotte, for all that you gave and meant to me in the many years of our friendship.
It is impossible to tell how much Charlotte Schreiber meant to me, as a Mentor, as a teacher, as a colleague, as a friend. In this heartbreaking moment, I want to remember her with this picture.
Ten years ago we shortly stopped in Beijing after fieldwork in the Tibetan area. We climbed the Jingshan hill facing the Forbidden City. The breathtaking view was partly limited by the haze. Next to the top pavillon two girls were running a throne with Chinese imperial dressing for tourists. Not the usual one, this was a very large and detailed copy of the Dragon Throne at the Qianqinggong, the Palace of Heavenly Purity, and they had an amazing set of different professional dresses. We stopped fascinated.
– “I think you should do it”.
– “You think?”.
Most of the times she did not like to be photographed. But the two girls, who saw our brief exchange, just walked toward her and took her by the hand and slowly started to dress her, with all the care and the profound respect due to the elders.
And there she was, happy.
