Very sad to hear the news of the passing of former DFL State Representative Bernie Lieder. Bernie represented HD 1B in Northwestern Minnesota from 1984 – 2010 and was the last member of the House to have served in World War II. He passed away peacefully yesterday in Crookston at the age of 97 years old. Rest in Power, Representative Lieder.

The Minnesota House DFL has lost a member of our family. We are mourning the loss of former State Representative Bernie Lieder. Bernie served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1985 through 2010. His work as the Polk County Engineer served him well as a member, as Bernie left an important footprint on the quality of Minnesota’s transportation infrastructure. His colleagues revered Bernie – for his service in World War II, for his kind demeanor, his sense of humor, and for his dedication to upholding high standards for Minnesota’s transportation networks. If you drove on Minnesota’s roads or bridges, or took transit anywhere in the state, Bernie cared that you got safely and efficiently to your destination. Bernie was a wonderful colleague and public servant.
Condolences to his family, friends, and community.

Former longtime District 1B State Rep. Bernie Lieder of Crookston has died. One of the true gentlemen. Even after he turned 90 he’d call the Times every now and then and even pop into the newsroom to talk transportation and other Minnesota issues.

MN lost a statesman with the passing of Rep. Bernie Lieder. He was a legislative giant. Wise, smart, hardworking, patient, & politically brave. Yet, he was also modest; always deflecting praise. A WWII combat veteran, he gave thanks every day for life. And what a life it was.

The MN House has lost a member of our family. We mourn the loss of former Rep. Bernie Lieder, who served from 1985 to 2010. Everyone who’s used Minnesota’s roads, bridges or transit has benefited from Bernie’s service – he was dedicated to making sure we arrived safely. Peace.

We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
