Having heard about this great loss, the family of this individual is passing through pains, mourning the unexpected passing of their beloved.

This departure was confirmed through social media posts made by Twitter users who pour out tributes, and condolences to the family of the deceased.

Playing Bernard Cohen in Loving was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life. When interracial marriage was still illegal in Virginia, he refused to let injustice stand. He took the fight to the Supreme Court & changed the country for the better in the process. RIP.

We got our marriage license on the 50th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia. While in line, I read a commemorative series of profiles of interracial couples in that day’s NYT. Forever grateful for the lives Bernard Cohen fought to make possible, including mine. Rest in power.

Bernard Cohen was on the side of the angels. He fought to ensure that Virginia (and America) lives up to our Constitutional values and that in the eyes of the law – and in society – love is love.

May his memory be a blessing.

What a legacy. Loving vs VA, & much more. Moving facts in this obit: his parents were Jewish immigrants, his older brother died serving in WWII, he worked his way through law school, he was with Mrs. Loving when she died in 2008. ⁦@EmilyLangerWP

As the daughter of an interracial couple living in Virginia, this one hurts. Because of the case brought forth by Bernard Cohen and the Loving’s—long before my parents met and my sister & I were born—our family is able to exist.

Thank you eternally, rest peacefully Mr. Cohen.

Bernie Cohen was a friend, historic civil rights lawyer, and dedicated public servant. He lived his life to make us true to the promises America and Virginia made about ourselves. We all are in his debt.

Today, we adjourned the Senate of Virginia in Honor and Memory of former Delegate Bernie Cohen — a brilliant legal mind and champion in the struggle for equality and human dignity.

Bernie made us a better, more loving Commonwealth and country. Godspeed.
