Barbara Jefford Dies at 90. Was Mainstay of the British stage who also appeared in films and on TV
Film and TV fans know Barbara Jefford (who died on Sept. 12, aged 90) from such films and TV series as Ulysses, Lady Windermere’s Fan, The Shoes of the Fisherman, Lust for a Vampire, Where Angels Fear to Tread, The Deep Blue Sea and Philomena. But much of her career was spent onstage, with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Old Vic, on the West End and on Broadway. Jefford specialized in Shakespeare, but also played in everything from Wilde to Racine to Shaw to Giraudoux. Although known for her period roles, Jefford told Dave Lanning, “overall, I’m glad I’m living when I am . . . It’s so much better these days to swing around in a skirt and sweater. And an actress today is at least permitted a mind of her own. Views on things.”—Eve Golden
sorry to hear that #BarbaraJefford has died. One of my favourite Jefford roles was when she played Lady Lydia Elliot in ‘The House of Elliot’ 1991. Her other roles include roles in ‘Midsomer Murders’ and a tv series of ‘The Canterbury Tales,’ 1969
