Albany Officer Shooting – Albany police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Monday morning on New Scotland Avenue.
According to the Department, on Monday, January 24, 2022, at about 12:50 a.m., the Albany Police Department’s Communication Center received a 911 call from someone at a home on the 100 block of Morris Street between New Scotland Avenue and Knox Street for an apparent home invasion involving a firearm.
Moments later, patrol officers traveling southbound on New Scotland Avenue near Dana Avenue, observed a man Street standing in a parking lot near the corner of New Scotland Avenue and Dana Avenue and stopped him as part of the investigation.
As the patrol officers approached, they also observed that was holding a knife in his hand and also had a dog. During their interaction with the man, and despite several commands from officers for him to drop the knife, the man sprinted aggressively towards the officers with the knife still in his hand and an Albany police officer fired his department-issued firearm, striking the suspect in the torso.
Officers immediately began to render emergency medical care and flagged down an ambulance that was traveling on New Scotland Avenue. The suspect, a 32-year-old man from Albany, was quickly transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Three Albany police officers who were at the scene of the shooting were also transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital per department protocols. One officer was treated for a dog bite to the arm. The other two were not physically injured.
At this time no further information is available as the incident remains under investigation.
