I’m very sad to hear of the death of Sir Alan Bowness. The Tate Gallery in the early 1980s was a very important place for me. I was bowled over to find myself having tea with Alan in St Ives 20 years later when I worked at the Royal Cornwall Museum! A special memory. RIP

Really, really sad to hear of the death of Sir Alan Bowness (1928-2021). He was my external examiner at university. Such a wonderful man. Critic. Historian. Inventor of the Turner Prize. The last truly cultured director of the Tate (1980-1988). Say hello to Mondrian for me Alan.

In memory of Sir Alan Bowness, I’ve uploaded the full filmed interview I made with him for @Tate_StIves where he talks about how he curated Hepworth’s Trewyn Studio into the Barbara Hepworth Museum:

It is with sadness that we received news of the death of Sir Alan Bowness (Modern Languages, 1950). A loss for the wider community, Sir Alan’s passing is a profound loss for The Heong Gallery, which he once called ‘an unexpected last act’ for his long career.

We are very sad to hear of the death of Sir Alan Bowness CBE, who helped set up the Association back in 1974. He contributed to our oral histories Podcast a few years back on why setting up an Association for art history at that time was so important.

I’m deeply saddened by the death of Sir Alan Bowness. His vision & ambition played a vital role in the success of the visual arts in Britain & the public’s engagement with it. Sir Alan enabled The Hepworth Family Gift, the catalyst for the creation of @HepworthGallery#Wakefield
